Imagine with me for one minute the experience of getting caught at a railroad crossing and the dramatic event that ensues. If you're a railfan, it's like having front row seats for a recital of Beethoven's 5th Symphony or AC/DC's For Those About To Rock.
As the gate's go down, you hear the faint wail of the locomotive horn on the horizon.
Seconds pass and the wail intensifies to a piercing harmony of air chimes and you feel the impending onslaught of twelve thousand horsepower racing against time.
A few seconds later you're awestruck by the mass and power of this rolling fracas hammering you in your seat.
As the power passes, your heart rate returns to normal and your gaze turns to the endless string of steel vessels being drug along by brute force.
The "woosh" of the passing cars is almost therapeutic as you enjoy the passing canvas of corporate branding masked by graffiti expressionism... Modern Art.
You note the cadence of steel wheels banging on a fresh track joint.
You turn to look for the flat spot on the tired wheel of a worn out scrap steel gon knowing full well it coasting past you at thirty miles per hour.
Which one is it!
Suddenly your head spins again to catch the bark of a flange squealing off the hard edge of a hundred pound rail.
The performance continues relentlessly for the next three hundred seconds with same intensity with which it began.
As the last car passes, your gaze turns to the steady pulse of the End-Of-Train marker signaling the end of this act.
You move along to your destination, hoping you might get lucky enough to get caught at the next crossing for an encore performance.
